There are 35 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: Bands performing in the Rose Parade have to get up VERY early in the morning. Depending on our position in the parade (we do not have this information yet), we could be up and in uniform as early as 3:00 AM! We will be observing New Year’s Eve on New York time and heading to bed early so we are ready to begin our day well before sunrise.

Rose Parade Saturday Rehearsals

We have Saturday rehearsals scheduled on December 9 and December 16 to work on the field show for our performance at Bandfest in Pasadena. Both rehearsals will be four hours long. On one of these days, we are traveling to the University of Utah to rehearse in their indoor arena. We will rehearse at Westlake on the other day. This rehearsal time will be invaluable to re-clean our show and continue our parade work.

Times have not been announced for these rehearsals because we are waiting to find out the date and time of our rehearsal at the University of Utah. The Utah football team is bowl-eligible, which means that they will also need practice time in the arena. Once the football practice schedule is set, we will be given our rehearsal time and can then finalize our schedule for both weeks.

We recognize that having to wait for the schedule specifics is not convenient and ask for your patience and flexibility while we wait for the information needed to finalize our schedule. For now, please hold open December 9 and 16 as listed on the calendar, knowing that there will be a four-hour rehearsal on each of those days.

Rose Parade Medical Forms and Float Decorating Waivers

EVERY student MUST provide a completed Rose Parade medical form and float decorating waiver. Students who not submitted a completed medical form will not be allowed to march in the parade. There are no exceptions to this. These forms were due by the Thanksgiving break.

As of this morning, there are 103 students that have not turned in their forms. The medical form can be downloaded here, and the float decorating form can be downloaded here. PLEASE print these forms, complete them, and put them in the envelope on Mr. Mangelson’s door. If you do not have the ability to print the forms, please contact Charlotte Ducos (cdducos@gmail.com) to make arrangements to get a printed copy.

We recognize that paperwork is never fun, but these forms must be submitted so that we have time to organize and file over 300 completed forms. Please submit these forms so that our parent volunteers do not have to contact every family directly.

Rose Parade Payments are Past Due

All payments for the Rose Parade are past due. If you have an outstanding balance, please contact Bob Rogers Travel immediately to make payment arrangements. This must be taken care of right away!

Color Guard Updates

Color guard members, please watch your email for messages and updates! If you are not receiving emails or alerts via the color guard app, please contact Aimie Furse (aimiefurse@gmail.com) or Beckie Perry (beckiep@gmail.com) to be added.

There is a parent meeting following rehearsal on Wednesday, December 29, at 6:30 PM. We will be providing information about the Fat Boy fundraiser that is kicking off as well as any information available about the coming winter guard season. Please plan to attend.

Marching Band Banquet

The marching band banquet will be held on Wednesday, January 10. The band will cover the cost for all students. Parents and other family members are $8 per plate.

At our booster meeting, we reviewed the cost and effort to self-cater vs. having the meal catered by Magleby’s, who had asked for the opportunity to cater for the band again after returning our check for catering the gala. They offered their services at a discount and the parents at the booster meeting made the decision to have the meal catered.

Once we have arranged with the finance office to accept payments, we will provide information on RSVPing for this event.

Making a Difference Service Competition

It is hard to believe we are doing our very last service event before the Rose Parade! It has been a fun competition and we look forward to seeing the final results.

Thank you to the students and parents who helped decorate our Festival of Trees tree last week and to those who donated treats. The tree looks amazing! Don’t forget to go to the Festival of Trees and check it out. The Festival of Trees is November 29 to December 2 at the South Towne Expo Center.

Keep gathering supplies for our refuge kits. The last day to turn in supplies is before marching band practice ends on December 6. Supplies should be put in the bins in the band room.

We will be assembling the refugee kits on December 6 at 6:00 PM (immediately following practice) in the band room. Please encourage your student to stay for this event. They do not have to sign up in order to stay. They can put their names and sections in the bin notebooks (that will be at the sign-up tables) in order to get credit.

We need parent volunteers to help oversee the assembly of these kits or to bring treats or healthy snacks. To sign up to help, go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044aa8a628aa8-refugee.

There was an issue with the SignUpGenius for supply donations for the hygiene and school kits. This has been corrected. Students can record their donations online or in the notebooks that are in the bins.

Students were given a form last week with information they can distribute to make collecting refugee kit items easier. They can fill in the date and distribute the paper through their neighborhoods to solicit donations. This is optional, but a great way to get a lot of donations. You can download a copy of the form here.
