Thunder Band News 10/16/2017

Congratulations on a great competition this weekend! We are especially excited about our color guard caption win—what an awesome accomplishment. We are so proud of Mariann and the whole color guard for pulling together, making adjustments, learning new work, and then putting your best work out on the field Saturday night!

We also want to express our thanks to all of the parents who have assisted with all of the competitions this season, including parents from the color guard this weekend. We have enjoyed having new parents come work with us during competitions. Without your help with props, equipment, food, and all sorts of other details, we couldn’t make this happen.

There are 77 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: Rose Parade volunteers are nicknamed “white suiters” because of the white uniform they wear. They give up evenings, weekends, and holidays to make sure that things run smoothly for the parade and game.

Saturday (Oct 16) No Competition

This Saturday, October 16, is fall break! Enjoy your break and we will see you next week for the Mt. Timpanogos competition.

We have a short week this week with rehearsals Monday through Wednesday and then a home football game on Wednesday night.

October 23 Rehearsal

Please make note that there is no school on Monday, October 23, but there WILL be rehearsal that day at 3:00 PM. Please make arrangements ahead of time to make sure that your student has transportation to and from this rehearsal.

Competition Food Sign-Up

We have reached the last competition before we head to St. George! Here is the signup for feeding the band for the Mt. Timpanogos competition.

Thank you for being so willing to help. We can’t do this without all the awesome parent help!

New Uniform Preparation

On Thursday, October 19, we will be meeting to box up the old uniforms to be sent to district surplus (per district policy) and prepare the racks and uniform bags so that they are ready when the new uniforms arrive. We will be meeting at 10:00 in the booster closet, down the hall from the band room at Westlake. This is the first day of fall break.

If you are available to help with this, please contact Tawnya Mayo at tawnyamayo@yahoo.com so that we know how many are planning to help. We are hoping to get this completely finished that morning.

Band Banquet

On January 10, 2018, we will hold a marching band banquet in the Westlake commons area to celebrate our season and commemorate our Rose Parade experience. Instead of honoring seniors and staff at the family show, we will be honoring them at this end-of-season banquet. We would love to have volunteers to help plan and carry out the banquet. If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Charlotte Ducos at cdducos@gmail.com.

Band Bash Volunteers

The band bash is on the evening of Thursday, October 26. We need some volunteers to help out backstage getting chairs and stands on and off the stage during the transitions between bands. Please sign up at the link below if you are willing to help out.

We will train you on what to do and there will be a couple of experienced parents back there who have done this before and can help give directions. If you ever wanted to get a peek at the band from backstage or see your child that is usually hidden at the back, this is a great opportunity to do so!

Rose Parade Medical Forms

All students who are marching in the Rose Parade are required to carry a medical information form with them while they are marching. The form can be downloaded here.

Every student must complete this form, have it signed by a parent, and turn it in as soon as possible so that we can make sure we have them collected for everyone. We would hate for any students to make the trip and not be able to march because they do not have their signed medical form.

Please print and sign the form and have your student put it in the manila envelope marked “Medical Forms” on Mr. Mangelson’s door as soon as possible. All forms should be turned in by November 10 so we can begin organizing and tracking down the forms we do not have.

Rose Parade Social Media Contest

The second social media contest for the 2018 Rose Parade has begun. For this contest, each band was asked to provide an audio recording of their band to accompany video provided by the Rose Parade committee. The contest is up and running.

You can find and vote for our video at https://www.tournamentofroses.com/makingadifference. Please share this link on your social media accounts and ask others to vote and repost. Thank you and go Thunder!

Rose Parade Trip Insurance

The deadline to purchase trip insurance for the Rose Parade tour is TODAY, October 16. If you would like insurance on your travel package, please log in to your account and get that taken care of today. There is also a payment due today, so please be sure you are current on your account.

End-of-Term Grades

As we hit the end of the term this week, eligibility for participation will be checked again. If you have failing grades, please work with your teachers to resolve those issues and get the grades up. We want you to succeed in your classwork, and we want you on the field!

Parent Jackets

For those who are interested in purchasing a parent jacket (which is totally optional), orders are due by midnight on October 18. These jackets are not provided by or sponsored by the band, they are being provided by a parent due to interest. All payments and orders run through this parent, independent of the band or finance office.

Information is at the links below. Please direct all questions, orders, and payments to Aimie Furse at aimiescreations@live.com or 801-706-5093.
