Thunder Band News 9/25/2017

Congratulations, Marching Thunder, on a successful (and rather soggy) first competition on Saturday! Thank you to all of the parents who braved the elements to help with props, pit, food, loading and unloading, and for those who came to support us in the stands. Now the work begins to prepare for this coming Saturday at Utah State.

There are 98 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Double digits! Rose Parade fun fact of the week: There are only four people who have been Grand Marshall of the Rose Parade more than once: Bob Hope (1947, 1969), President Richard Nixon (1953,1960), Earl Warren (1943, 1955), and Shirley Temple Black (1939, 1989, 1999).

Friday (Sep 29) Football Game Schedule

We will be performing the field show after the football game has concluded. We will do a single run of the show and then students will put away equipment and instruments, so the pickup time will be later than for most football games.

Here is the schedule for Friday’s game. Students should bring a sack dinner to eat.

  • 3:00 PM – Pregame rehearsal
  • 5:00 PM – Dinner break (bring sack dinner)
  • 6:00 PM – Warm up
  • 6:35 PM – Line up
  • 6:48 PM – Pregame starts
  • 7:00 PM – Game starts
  • After game – Perform field show and then put away equipment

Band students wear blue jeans, band polo shirts, black socks, and black marching shoes. Band students should wear the white shirt that goes under their uniform shirt along with their polo shirt. Guard wear your Rose Parade shirt, warm-ups or navy pants and a zip jacket.

Music Pass-off Status

An email was sent out a couple of weeks ago with a picture of the music pass-off chart. This email includes a picture of the current music pass-off chart.

We made good progress that first week in the amount of music passed off, but it is far from finished and progress seems to have stalled. There are still lots of students who haven’t finished passing off their music. Most have demonstrated that they can play it in rehearsals, but have not taken the important step of passing off. The same confidence needed to pass off to a staff member is needed out on the field as we perform.

Please ask your student if their music is passed off. If they have not done so, please consider applying appropriate motivation for your child. Pass-offs should have been completed a couple weeks ago.

Our music scores took a hit on Saturday. One of the best ways your student can help contribute to significant improvement for this coming Saturday will be in practicing and being confident enough to pass off their music.

Videographer Needed

We are looking for a parent who is willing to record a few of our performances. Most shows provide us with a video recording of the performance, but the Utah State, BYU, and BOA (St. George) shows do not provide videos due to copyright issues at the universities.

We need a parent who will be attending these three shows and has quality video equipment (not a phone recording) to record the performance and send the files to Mr. Mangelson. These competitions provide us with a media pass that allows you to go up high to get the recording. If you can help with this, please contact Charlotte Ducos at cdducos@gmail.com.

Spring Service Cleanup Sign Up

The sign-up sheet is now posted so that students who participated in the spring service projects can record their participation. Please take time to sign your name and band section for those students and parents who participated in these events. This is important so that we can give credit to the sections for their participation.

To sign up, go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044aa8a628aa8-may2017.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. Watch out for information about the Festival of Trees service event in the near future.
