There are 105 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: There are about 300 horses in the Rose Parade each year.

Cleaning Camp Results

Thank you for a very successful weekend of cleaning camps. The students and staff worked very hard and made a lot of progress. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we are so pleased with the progress made over the weekend.

The pass-off chart is looking so much better. We still have some students who have pieces to pass off, so please take care of any remaining blank spaces this week and keep practicing.

Students, let’s keep the energy and motivation high! Our first competition is coming up this weekend, so lets make this an amazing week of rehearsals.

Competition Uniform Information

We have worked out the last details for our interim uniforms and the last pieces will arrive this week. During the football game on Friday night, parents will be putting names on all of the pieces and getting them organized for competitions. If you are available to help with this, please contact Tawnya Mayo at tawnyamayo@yahoo.com for details on time and location.

We are looking for a parent who does embroidery that would be willing to embroider the students’ names on tags that will go on the bags that hold their uniform pieces. If you are able to help with this, contact Tawnya Mayo at the above email address.

For Saturday’s competition, students should arrive at the school wearing:

  • Dark blue jeans with no holes
  • A white tank top, layer shirt, or undershirt with a medium to low cut (no crew neck) and NOT a full sleeve
  • Long black socks
  • Marching shoes

Students will receive their uniform shirt at the competition each week. Wearing an undershirt will allow them to modestly remove the shirt they are wearing to change into their uniform shirt and then change back into their own shirt after the competition so that the uniform shirts can be laundered.

We are trying to avoid white necklines and sleeve lines from showing at the edge of the shirts. Please ensure that white shirts meet the description above. If your student does not already have a white shirt that fits this description, consider a group purchase of Hanes or another brand at Walmart. If you buy a bulk pack, they are only one or two dollars per shirt.

If you have any questions about uniforms, please ask.

Monday (Today) Rehearsal Schedule

This afternoon’s rehearsal schedule has been adjusted to allow Vista Heights band students to perform at Mr. Thornton’s funeral. Rehearsal will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Vista Heights students, please remember to bring your rehearsal clothing and equipment along with a snack or sack lunch so that you can change and be ready for rehearsal at 4:00 PM. Also, be sure to follow instructions and get on the marching band bus at the funeral, which will be leaving shortly after the performance.

Friday (Sep 22) Football Game Schedule

We have a home football game this Friday. Here is the schedule for Friday’s game. Students should bring a sack dinner to eat.

  • 3:00 PM – Pregame rehearsal
  • 5:00 PM – Dinner break (bring sack dinner)
  • 6:00 PM – Warm up
  • 6:35 PM – Line up
  • 6:48 PM – Pregame starts
  • 7:00 PM – Game starts

Band students wear blue jeans, band polo shirts, black socks, and black marching shoes. Guard wear your Rose Parade shirt, warm-ups or navy pants and a zip jacket, with natural makeup and hair down and partially pulled back.

Saturday (Sep 23) Nebo Tournament of Bands Schedule

This saturday, September 23, we have our first competition at the Nebo Tournament of Bands at Payson High School. Here is the schedule for this week’s competition.

  • 10:00 AM – Rehearse
  • 1:00 PM – Lunch break (bring a sack lunch), load trailer, guard hair and makeup
  • 3:00 PM – Buses depart
  • 5:25 PM – Warm up (area A)
  • 6:30 PM – Perform
  • 7:15 PM – Awards
  • After awards – Eat dinner and load trailer
  • 9:30 PM – Arrive at Westlake, unload trailer

See the information above about competition uniforms for information on what band students should be wearing. After morning rehearsal, guard will wear warm-ups and Rose Parade shirt. Guard students who do not have warm-ups should wear navy pants and zip-up jacket.

Color guard, make sure you are wearing your show shoes inside this week to break them in BEFORE the competition. Insider trick: Put on two pairs of socks and then your jazz shoes. Lightly blow dry the toe box to fit your foot.

We can use any available parents to help load and unload the trailer on Saturday. If you are available to help, load please be at the Westlake band room by 12:30 PM on Saturday. We will start loading props at 12:30 PM so that we are ready for students to start loading their equipment at 1:00 PM.

Pit Crew Volunteers

We need four more parents to sign up to be “pit crew” at competitions. These parents will also help with trailer loading and unloading at competitions. If you are available to help, contact Dave Duke at duke84043@gmail.com.

Pit crew parents need to be at the last hour of this Wednesday’s rehearsal to practice moving the pit on and off the field.

Competition Food Sign-Up

The sign-up sheet for food donations for the Utah State competition (September 30) is now available at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044daeaf23a13-utah1. Please follow the link and read the description carefully before signing up.

Please take careful note of the times for dropping off food items at the band room. If you are not able to make these times, please coordinate with Becky Barney by email at beckybarney6@gmail.com or call or text 914-439-7534 to arrange another time.

Thank you so much for your willingness to help. We can’t do this without you! If you have any questions about food, contact Becky Barney by phone, text, or email.

Water Bottles for Competitions

This year we are asking students to bring their water bottle with them to competitions. We will provide water cups to the students when they are in uniform going on and off the field, but for meals and times they are not in uniform, students will use their own water bottles. We are hoping to cut down on the number of cups we use for each event and hope this will save us a little money and a little waste over the long run.

Spring Service Cleanup Sign Up

The sign-up sheet is now posted so that students who participated in the spring service projects can record their participation. Please take time to sign your name and band section for those students and parents who participated in these events. This is important so that we can give credit to the sections for their participation.

To sign up, go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044aa8a628aa8-may2017.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. Watch out for information about the Festival of Trees service event in the near future.
