There are 140 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: Those who can’t make it to watch the Rose Parade still have a chance to see the floats up close. You can purchase tickets to see the floats at rest for three days following the parade, although it is best not to wait until the third day due to wilting.

RegisterMyAthlete Review

Westlake athletic policy requires that all physicals, fees, and records in RegisterMyAthelete MUST be completed by August 18. Your student’s RegisterMyAthelete account must be marked “completed” by this date. After this date, students without physicals, fees, or paperwork completed in the system will not be allowed to practice or perform with the band. This policy applies for all Westlake programs working within the RegisterMyAthelete system.

We will be contacting families with outstanding issues this week. If you know that this applies to you, please get any outstanding items taken care of ASAP!

Report Card Submission for Eligibility

Utah High School Activities Association rules require all students to submit a printed copy of their 2016-17 fourth quarter report card in order to determine eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities. This must be complete by August 18. Report card should be put in the manila envelope marked “Report Cards” in the slot on Mr. Mangelson’s door.

To print your report card, log into Skyward, click on Portfolio, and then click on the Q4 report card. If you have not already generated the report card, a popup will appear while the report card is being generated.

The printed report card has the Alpine School District logo at the top and the term GPA and cumulative GPA at the bottom. If you do not have the capability to print a copy at your home, please contact Charlotte Ducos at cdducos@gmail.com to discuss possible solutions.

School-to-School Form for Ninth Grade Students

Earlier this year we sent out the “school to school” form that ninth grade students need to submit to participate in marching band. These can now be submitted. A copy of the form can be found here: WHS School to School form.

Please follow the instructions on the attached form to gather all required signatures and then submit the form to the Westlake counseling office as soon as possible. This form is only required for ninth grade students.

Band Fee Payments are Now Past Due

Band fees are now past due. If you have not paid your fees, please get your fees paid as soon as possible. This can be done online at MySchoolFees.com or in the Westlake finance office. If fees are not paid by Friday, August 18, your student may not be able to practice or perform with the band.

September 9 ACT Testing Date

As we discussed at step-off meeting, marching band students are not able to take the ACT test on September 9 due to cleaning camp. Because this is a camp that has been on the schedule from the beginning, students will not be excused to take the test. Students who wish to take the ACT will be able to take the October test because call time for the competition that day will not be until later in the afternoon. Please do not schedule to take the September ACT. Exceptions and excused absences are not allowed for this date.

Drumline Performance August 18

Our drumline has been invited to perform for all teachers and administrators in our cluster on Friday, August 18, at the district’s cluster back-to-school kickoff. Call time is 6:45 AM. We will be playing as the teachers and administrators arrive for the meeting. We are looking forward to this exciting opportunity to represent our school!

Making a Difference Service Competition

A huge thank you to all the students who volunteered at Joshua Fluckiger’s build day on August 5th! It was a great success. Joshua’s dad said he was grateful to have such happy and helpful people participate. In his words, “your kids were awesome!”

From one of our other band parents: “This band group continues to amaze me! Parents, you should be so proud of your kids. They are really catching the spirit of ‘Making A Difference.’ There was no competition incentive for the kind acts several of your students performed in my family’s behalf last week after we had experienced some very difficult and overwhelming life events. You know who you are and what service you performed, and it may have seemed like a small thing—but it was huge! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can’t even express what that meant.”

Keep checking the newsletter for more service updates. The SignUpGenius links will be available soon for last May’s service projects so we can see which section is ahead in the competition.

Booster Meeting Report

The band boosters met on Wednesday, August 9, for our regular booster meeting and we updated our bylaws. The minutes from the meeting and a copy of the bylaws can be found on the website under “Resources” in the Booster section at the following links.

St. George Competition Hotel Reservations

For our trip to the St. George competitions, we will be staying at the Best Western Coral Hills in St. George. The band reserves enough rooms for students, staff, and a limited number of chaperones. The rooms for chaperones will be assigned by our volunteer over trips.

Parents who wish to book rooms for the trip need to do so on their own. We do not know if the hotel will extend our group pricing to parents. You are welcome to call them, let them know you are Westlake parents, and see what they can do.

Gas Cans Needed

We need four 5-gallon gas cans that we can use to rotate fuel for our generator and equipment for the band. In the past, we have been able to purchase gasoline as needed, but a change in district policy prevents us from doing that in the future. We have worked out a system with the district to periodically fill gas cans as needed. The schedule for filling the cans will depend on the district schedule and not on our demand, so we need to have spare cans on hand so that we do not run out.

If you are able to donate a single, empty 5-gallon plastic gas can for use by the band, please sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e44a9ad28a75-gascan.
