There 189 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: The only year there was NOT a parade was 1942. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 and the government advised against holding the parade for reasons of national security. The Rose Parade queen and her court drove quietly down Colorado Blvd past a few pedestrians on a mostly deserted street. Sixteen members of the Tournament of Roses Band formed a V for Victory and marched down Colorado Blvd as well, playing military songs and singing “Stout Hearted Men.” The Tournament committee members and city administrators gathered for a luncheon at the Huntington Hotel where 33 miniatures of floats that would have appeared in the parade were on display.

Register My Athlete Deadline

This is the last week for students to be cleared through Register My Athlete. Please check Register My Athlete to make sure you have completed all steps to be cleared for participation. All requirements must be checked off with the exception of the payment of fees. If you have items that need taken care of, please do so this week.

If you feel you have filled everything out but the form will not allow you to sign, please go back and make sure you have marked an answer for EVERY option on the page. If the answer is not “yes,” please answer “no.” The form will not allow you to sign unless you have answered every line. Once you verify this, you should be allowed to sign. Please contact Sharon Mardesich (smardesich@alpinedistrict.org) if you have questions or problems.

The Battalion Performance

On Saturday, July 1, the “Sanpete Beat,” featuring The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps will be held at Manti High School from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. This event is free to the public. Some of our very own Marching Thunder members will be in this show. Come and get a sneak peak of their 2017 show—Listen to the Silence—before they head out on tour!

Yard Sale

There will be a multi-family yard sale on July 1 in the Silverlake subdivision in Eagle Mountain. Students in the band and color guard have been invited to participate in this if they would like to earn money for their individual fees and tour.

This is not a band-sponsored event and we are not affiliated with the event. We are passing on the word that this is an opportunity to raise funds if you are interested in participating. Please see the attached flier for details if you would like to participate or support the event.

Corps Encore

On July 12, Corps Encore will be held in Stewart Stadium at Weber State University at 7:00 PM. We have several members and former members of the Marching Thunder participating in this show with The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps.

Tickets purchased in blocks of 20 or more avoid the processing fee. If you are interested in purchasing tickets with a group, please contact Nisha Murray at 801-518-9470.

Days of ’47 Parade

For the Days of ’47 Parade in July, the band will be wearing khaki shorts and polo shirts. Khaki shorts are required for all students for this parade and should be long and in good repair. Please preparing for this now so that there is not a last minute rush to find the required shorts. Polo shirts and shoes have been ordered and will be distributed when rehearsals start in July.

We have received questions about what shade of khaki is desired. The answer: light khaki. Remember that shorts should be long — school appropriate length, please.

Rose Parade “Making a Difference” Service Competition

In the spirit of the Rose Parade theme, we are going to hold a “service competition” between the different sections in the band. We have several exciting service events we will be doing throughout the marching band season. We hope everyone has fun with this and will live up to the Westlake Marching Thunder name by showing respect and kindness during the several service events. Let’s make Utah proud as we represent the Rose Parade theme of “Making a Difference.”

Be watching for the Sign Up Genius lists that will be sent via email periodically. At the end of the season , the section who had the most members sign up for and perform the various service events will be invited to an ice cream party in their honor. There are only a certain number of sign up slots available for each event, so be watching your email and sign up in a timely manner.

The first event will be providing speaking partners for students of “English Without Limits” in Eagle Mountain this Thursday evening and each Thursday evening in July. There are only four slots each day. The SignUpGenius list for this will be sent out on Tuesday.

The second event will be joining Joshua Fluckiger on the morning of August 5th as he completes an Eagle Scout project for for “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.” Sleep in Heavenly Peace provides bunk beds, which we will build, and bedding for children without beds. We will be passing out flyers next week for band members to take around to their neighborhoods to collect monetary donations to buy the materials and bedding for this build event. Collecting donations counts for the competition even if you do not participate on the build day.

Look for the SignUpGenius on Tuesday. More information will be sent so keep reading the emails! Students will need to provide their own rides to these events, but parents and students can arrange carpools on their own. Thanks ahead of time for supporting this fun competition. We know that you will “make a difference” in your own community and in the world community. Please call Karen Rowley (385-539-0481) with any questions.
