There 223 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: The Salvation Army Band has been in the Rose Parade the most times. They have marched in every parade since 1920.

Rose Parade President Visit

Thank you to the Marching Thunder students and parents that came out to the events this past weekend, whether it was Cool School of the Week, the incredible turnout for our Saturday morning service projects, or the gala Saturday night. It was an amazing weekend and the Marching Thunder represented themselves well!

Thank you to all of the students and parents who helped with the gala. It was a huge undertaking and couldn’t have happened without your help. We also want to give a special shout out to the students who volunteered to serve the guests at the gala Saturday evening. We received many comments on how amazing they were and how they handled themselves with maturity, kindness, professionalism, and class. You helped create an amazing evening for the guests who attended and can hold your head high and know you did an amazing job!

As Mr. and Mrs. Tibbet were getting ready to leave town, we asked them to tell us their favorite part of their time here with the Westlake Marching Thunder. Without hesitation, their answer was the people. We couldn’t agree more. Thank you for all the ways you are “Making a Difference” in our community.

Graduation Equipment Transportation

We need of someone to pull the equipment trailer for graduation. BYU does not allow us to arrive with our equipment trailer on the morning of graduation, so we will need to drop it off on Thursday evening. It can be picked up on Friday evening or Saturday and pulled back to Westlake. Please contact Mr. Mangelson (bmangelson@alpinedistrict.org) to work out the details if you are available to help. A truck or Suburban with towing capacity is all that is needed.

Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs Parades

As we announced, the Marching Thunder will not be marching in the Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs parades this year due to that fact that our season begins in July. However, we DO have an entry in both parades: a truck with a banner and students handing out fliers about our trip to the Rose Parade and our fundraising efforts. Participation in these two parades is not mandatory this year, but we are looking for a minimum of 20 to 30 students to participate in each parade.

This will be an excellent opportunity to get the word out to our two communities about this amazing opportunity we have to march in the 2018 Rose Parade and about how they can help support the band. It is also a great way to show our commitment to and support of our communities.

Sign-ups are on the board in the band room at Westlake. The lists will be up during this week’s sectionals as well, so middle school students will have an opportunity to sign up during their sectionals. Band members should wear their band polo shirt and khaki shorts for the parades. Let us know on the sign-up if you do not yet have your polo shirt and we will work to get shirts for you to wear.

The Eagle Mountain parade is on June 3. We will meet at 7:50 am at Ridley’s in Eagle Mountain to be bused to the starting area of the parade. The Saratoga Springs parade is on June 10. More details on call time for that parade will be coming next week.

Thank you for representing the Westlake Marching Thunder!

Marching Band Registration

We currently have 39 students who have begun the process of registration on Register My Athlete, but have not completed either the registration portion or the informational portion. Please log in and check your student’s registration status in Register My Athlete, even if you think you have completed registration.

Your student’s status should read “Ready for Tryouts” and all steps should be marked in green EXCEPT the fee payment, which will remain red and incomplete until we pay fees in July. Thank you for your attention to this matter. If for any reason you have not registered on Register My Athlete, please do so right away.

Parade Tour Payments

Please remember that tour payments should be made to Bob Rogers Travel and that you should stay current with the established payment schedule. If you have questions about your tour account, please contact Bob Rogers Travel. If for any reason you are not registered for the tour, please contact Bob Rogers Travel immediately to complete that registration.

Polo Shirt and Shoe Order Payments

If your student ordered a polo shirt or marching shoes at step off meeting, payments for these items are due immediately. These items can be paid for on www.myschoolfees.com as a public fee under Marching Band. You can also pay at the Westlake finance office. Email your receipt to sivins4@gmail.com or put a copy in the envelope on Mr. Mangelson’s door.

Instrument Rental Fee

Students in the following sections are required to payment a $70 instrument rental fee all percussion, baritone, euphonium, mellophone, sousaphone, bass clarinet, and baritone saxophone. This fee is not available as a public fee at MySchoolFees. If you are a Westlake student, the fee is listed in the Band category and can be paid online. Middle school students will need to make this payment at the Westlake finance office.

Please remember to send your receipts to Shawna Ivins at sivins4@gmail.com or to put a copy in the envelope on Mr. Mangelson’s door.

Marching Band Physicals

If your student still needs to complete a physical for marching band, one of our parents, Jen Wall, is offering to do physicals for $20. If you are interested in scheduling a physical, contact Jen at 801-602-6332.

Clothing Drive

The clothing drive is now complete. We had our final drop-off during the service project on Saturday. We were able to fill this second trailer half full.

Thank you to all of those who donated clothing during this project. We will announce the fund amount raised when that total comes in.

We do not have the ability to take any further donations. If you missed this final drop, the football team does a clothing drive in the fall, so support the football team and donate to their drive.
