There are 238 days until the 2018 Rose Parade.  Did you know that the floats in the Rose Parade can only be decorated with organic materials?  Floats are sprayed with foam that hardens and is painted the colors of the flowers that it will hold.  Then bark, seeds, or other organic materials are applied.  Live flowers are not added until a few days before the parade.  All live flowers are kept in vials of water to keep them fresh.

New Gala Pricing-Please Sell Tickets!

Based on feedback we have received, we have chosen to lower the price of Gala tickets to $50 per ticket. This pricing is now active on the webpage (www.thunderband.com/gala/) and updated invitations are available by link on the Resources page on www.thunderband.com. We hope this change will make the ticket price more accessible for businesses and community members.  Please reach out to business owners, neighbors, and friends you think may be interested in supporting the Band. YOU are their best connection to the Band and the one most likely to be successful in getting them involved!  As mentioned at the Step-off meeting, parents are not expected to purchase a ticket, but are of course, welcome to do so.   Have you checked with your orthodontist or other offices you frequent? Also consider checking back with businesses that were not interested in a Banner sponsorship but offered to help in some other way.  We encourage every student to find one or two (or more) people to purchase a ticket.  The final count is due to the caterer by May 13, so this week is the big push!  Thank you for your hard work and support!

Silent Auction Information

Each section has been asked to gather and provide items for one basket to be auctioned during the Silent Auction at the Gala.  If you have not been contacted by your section parent, we are asking you to reach out to them to see how you can help.  We are still trying to get Charms updated so that we can pull section lists and provide them to the section parents, but for now they are working on an outdated list—so if you haven’t been contacted—contact them!  A list of sections and section parents is included below.

Thank you to the Section Parents who have already chosen their theme. Below are the ones that have been taken:

Clarinet: Getaway

Baritone: Ute

Mellophone: Golf

Pit: Spa & Picnic/summer

Drumline: Dinner & Movie

Trumpet: Camping/Campfire themed basket

Sousaphones: Boy Toy

If your section is not here then I have not heard from you. PLEASE reach out to me ASAP to let me know what basket you have decided to do.  If you need help, questions, or ideas I am here to help!

Also, you received a letter at the kick off meeting that was titled “Dear Community Partner” with the W9 on the back for tax purposes.  I have more of those. If you need some let me know. Please reach out to friends, family, or businesses you patronize to see if they would be willing to donate items, services, gift cards, or a monetary amount to help your cause. If the donation does not fit in your section theme – NO WORRIES – we will be able to place it somewhere else.  Please let me know and I will pick up anything you gather, or it can be dropped off at Westlake, ATTN: Sharon Mardesich.

Also, PLEASE if you have items that can be donated that you are not using–we can use them elsewhere, in a different basket with other donations we will be gathering.  Do you have an old gift card in a drawer for a restaurant you don’t like? Did your mother in law give you a plate you hated for Christmas? Is it new and in a box or has tags? We can use it! We can also use nice “like new” baskets or containers for our donations.  Call me, text, or email and I will come get them.

We need all hands to make this a success. Thanks for all you do!

Save These Dates

May 18-21, the 2018 Tournament of Roses President, Lance Tibbet will be visiting the Westlake Marching Thunder!  As mentioned at the Step-Off meeting, there are a few events we are asking students and parents to participate in:

Friday, May 19:  Meet at Westlake High School at 5:20 am (yes, you read this correctly) to participate in Fox 13’s Cool School of the Week.  Wear your Westlake gear and be there by 5:20 am on the dot to cheer and have fun and represent the Band!

Saturday May 20 Service Project:  Meet at Westlake High School at 8:00 am for our service projects.  Wear closed toe shoes and gloves, and long pants are strongly recommended.  Bring rakes, hoes, shovels, clippers, etc.  We will have projects in Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain Cities.  We will meet at Westlake and then send students to project locations based on where they are most needed.  Service projects will end at 10:30 to allow students to travel back to Westlake for lunch provided by Chick fil A at 11:00 am.  We will need a few parents to help supervise at each project so if you would like to be involved, we would love to have you!

Saturday May 20 Gala:  Wind Symphony and Advanced Jazz Ensemble members will be performing at the Gala.  This is a required performance for these students.  We are also in need of parent and student volunteers to serve the meal that evening.  (See signup sheet above). Help is also needed for the Auction.  Contact Kelly Molinari if you would like to help out with the auction (630-222-8362 or Kelly@ILhomepros.com).

Step-Off Documents Available

If you missed picking up the documents that were handed out at Step-off Meeting, or if you were unable to attend, the documents have now been posted on the website.  The new invitation reflecting the reduced price is also available on the website.  Go to www.thunderband.com and click on the Resources tab to find them.  Also, please be sure to fill out the Parent Survey to let us know how you would like to help out this season.  You can fill out the survey in just a couple minutes.  Right now, only 14 families have taken it!  Click the link to fill out the survey: https://goo.gl/forms/tjk2DGoa549Mv0Ix2

Instrument Rental Information

As a follow-up to Step-Off meeting or for those unable to attend, we wanted to clarify that the $70 instrument rental fee is NOT available as a Public fee online. It can only be paid as a Student fee.  If you are not a current student at Westlake you will need to pay in the finance office at Westlake.  For those paying on www.myschoolfees.com the instrument rental is found under the Band heading, not Marching Band. Hopefully that helps alleviate some of the confusion.

Instruments needing to pay the fee are: All Percussion, Baritones, Euphoniums, Mellophones,

Sousas, Bass Clarinet, and Baritone Saxophone. Please send receipts to Shawna at sivins4@gmail.com.  Thank you.

Polo and Shoe Order Payments

If your student ordered a polo and/or marching shoes at step off meeting, please get those paid for as soon as you can. The payment is on available on www.myschoolfees.com  as a Public fee under Marching Band.  You can also pay at Westlake Financial Office.  Please turn in your receipt to Shawna at sivins4@gmail.com or in the envelope on Mr. Mangelson’s door.  Thank you.

Clothing Drive Update

* We would like to recognize Dalton Klinger who was the 2nd place winner for our Clothing Drive at 64 bags of clothes. We inadvertently missed him when doing the tally, and we are so grateful for his contribution and we will be getting him a special prize later!

We will be scheduling a truck for the remaining clothing bags for Saturday May 20.  If a truck is available, we will transfer the bags from our trailer to the fundraiser trailer while we are at Westlake for the Service Project. Please plan to drop off all remaining bags that morning either as students arrive at 8:00 am, or as the project is ending at 11:00 am.  This will be the last day that we will be accepting donations.  We are just over half full right now.  We would love to fill the rest of the trailer, so keep gathering and bring the bags on May 20th!

Parents Please Update Charms

Parents, please log in to Charms as soon as possible to update your information.  Charms is the program we use to send our weekly emails as well as to keep track of contact information.  We were hoping to transfer information from Register My Athlete into Charms, but the conversion will not work, so we need all parents and students to update their information.  Go to www.thunderband.com and scroll all the way to the bottom to the Links and click on Charms.  If you have not logged in before, the password is your child’s student number.  Once you log in, you can set your own password.  Please make sure all contact information is up to date, and all other fields are filled in as well.  Thank you!

Optional Water Bottle Orders

Want to order your student one of the Westlake Marching Thunder Bottles? We now have them listed on mountainriderswag.com and they will be up to order until Friday May 12 (this is so I can get your bottles to your students prior to the last day of school!) They are vacuum insulated, double walled, stainless steel water bottles. They will keep water cold for 24 hours or hot for 8-12, so great for both hot rehearsals and cold competitions! The bottle we are doing for this order is 25oz and we are including either a straw or spout top with your order (normally an additional $1.) These bottles retail anywhere from $28 up, my company sells them starting at $25. From the 12th the bottles will take 10 business days at most and will be dropped off in the band room once ready and a charms email will be sent out to let you know to pick them up! If any of you are interested in any additional orders for your families, please send me (Kerisa) an email (kerisa.devey@gmail.com) so I can help you and give you a great deal!

Here is the link where you can order your bottle: https://www.mountainriderswag.com/shop/marchingthunder
